ABOUT

BlackDog

When Lisa, our founder, and her husband adopted their first dog they were very aware that black, male dogs were the least likely dogs to be adopted from the shelter and with that in mind that's exactly the type of dog they sought out. Two years later they repeated the process again as they adopted their second black, male rescue dog.
Always feeling like somewhat of the underdog themselves, Andrew and Lisa have always had the heart to open their home to those who would otherwise be overlooked. They've fostered 16 kids and gave 7 exchange students a home here in the US. They never want anyone to feel like they don't belong and they're not wanted.
Here at BlackDog Coffee we don't want to just sell really exceptional coffee, we want to create a space where everyone is welcome to be themselves and know that there's always a seat open and waiting for them.
Our History

The Hyatt family has lived, worked, and served in Eaton Rapids for generations. The tradition of entreprenuership and community involvement started with Roy Hyatt (Lisa's great-great grandpa) who made and sold cream and butter out of his basement. This business grew and developed into the Hyatt's Egg Packing Company, located in the heart of downtown at 309 S Main (Where Eaton Community Bank is now located).
Both Roy and his son, Lawrence, were known for supporting their local community and delivering a great product. The catch phrase was "For A Good Egg Call Hyatt", which is still known in the community today.
While still running the egg business, Lawrence went on to purchase a car wash, which is now 120 W Hamlin. Eaton Rapids has always been a town with rich family history, but 120 W Hamlin has specifcally been part of our family legacy of entreprenuership and downtown development. And when we saw 120 W Hamlin was for sale, we knew it was meant to be.
We can't wait to bring another Hyatt family business into downtown Eaton Rapids and pick up where Lawrence left off all those years ago.

Mission
BlackDog Coffee: for the Betterment and Development of Community
Community Impact

From day one BlackDog Coffee has prioritized giving back to the community in three ways: gathering space, volunteering, and funding.
  • First, we started with the space. We wanted a place big enough that a local group or organization could easily meet and bring everyone together, so we looked for a building that was bigger than what a typical coffee shop would need.
  • Second, we started to get involved and funded staff members willing to give their time. All BlackDog Coffee staff get two paid hours a month that goes towards volunteering. Staff can volunteer at the local animal shelter, go to a city council meeting, volunteer with an after school program, or whatever cause they feel pulled to.
  • Third, we fund community improvements and events. We're happy to support events and projects that improve and uplift our community and bring people together. For more information on sponsorship and support, email [email protected] .
Meet the Founder

After helping communities and both large and small businesses grow for almost a decade, Lisa Barna, BlackDog Coffee Founder decided it was time to strike out on her own. To get experience in the coffee industry, she started working as a barista while selling BlackDog Coffee at 6 weekly farmers markets around Mid-Michigan.
She's now excited to bring BlackDog Coffee to Eaton Rapids.
Outside of coffee, Lisa loves spending time with her husband Andrew, being outdoors, volunteering, being a foster mom, and spending time with her two black dogs Diego and Duncan.
